Freedom Oklahoma Launches Name & Gender Marker Change Clinic

We are excited to announce the launch of a name and gender marker change clinic in partnership with OUtlaw and The Diversity Center of Oklahoma.

The Freedom Oklahoma Name and Gender Marker Change Clinic will be the first recurring assistance program in the area for individuals seeking to update their legal name and gender marker to match their identity. The clinic will be staffed by law students from the University of Oklahoma College of Law, with support from The Diversity Center of Oklahoma.

“By familiarizing law students with the needs of the transgender and non-binary communities and training them in the name and gender marker change process, we will be fundamentally changing the legal landscape for years to come,” said Elizabeth Horn, Program Director at Freedom Oklahoma. “We are thrilled for this opportunity to partner with the Diversity Center and OUtlaw volunteers to respond to an urgent need within our communities.”

“Our transgender colleagues need identification documents that accurately reflect their identity to access employment and housing, to open bank accounts, and to travel,” said Phillip Kim of OUtlaw. “There’s an epidemic of violence against transgender people, especially transgender women of color, and it is incumbent upon all of us to uplift those voices and to build a world that is safe for every person who calls our state home.”
